At its core, the VL53L0X contains a 940nm VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) and a SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) detector. Because light travels at approximately 300,000 km/s, the sensor uses ultra-fast internal timers to provide millimetre-level precision in a module no larger than a standard LED.
