The "Membrane" design consists of two layers of flexible plastic with conductive silver ink traces. When you press a button, you are physically pushing the two layers together to complete a circuit. Because it has no moving mechanical parts, it is resistant to dust and can survive millions of presses.
Why it’s a Project Essential:
• The Matrix Efficiency: In a standard setup, 12 buttons would require 12 pins. By using a Matrix (Rows x Columns), the keypad only needs 7 pins. The microcontroller "scans" the keys by turning one row on at a time and checking which column becomes active.
• Professional Mounting: The back of the keypad features a strong adhesive. You can simply cut a small slit in your project box for the ribbon cable and stick the keypad directly to the surface.
• Tactile Feedback: Despite being thin, these "soft-touch" buttons provide a slight tactile click, letting the user know the press was successful.
• Universal Connector: The 7-pin female header has a standard 2.54mm pitch, meaning it plugs directly into breadboards or standard male-to-male jumper wires.
