This sensor works by measuring the change in capacitance. In simple terms, it uses the soil as a "dielectric" material. As water content in the soil increases, the capacitance changes, which the onboard circuitry converts into an analog voltage.
Why Capacitive is Better Than Resistive:
• Corrosion Resistance: Standard resistive sensors pass a current through the soil, which causes the metal probes to oxidize and degrade within weeks. The V1.2 sensor has its "active" parts protected by a solder mask, allowing it to stay in damp soil for years without degrading.
• Consistent Readings: Because the probe doesn't change physically over time (due to corrosion), your calibration remains much more stable, requiring fewer adjustments to your code.
• Safe for Plants: Since no electricity is being passed directly into the soil/water, it is safer for delicate root systems and doesn't alter the soil chemistry through electrolysis.
Technical Capabilities:
• Analog Output (A0): The sensor provides a continuous voltage output. As the soil gets wetter, the output voltage typically decreases (though this can vary slightly by manufacturer).
• Wide Voltage Range: It operates comfortably on 3.3V to 5V, making it compatible with everything from an Arduino Uno to an ESP32 or Raspberry Pi (with an external ADC).
• Low Power Consumption: It is efficient enough to be powered directly from a microcontroller's digital pin, allowing you to turn it on only when you need a reading to save battery.
