As a passive, non-polarized semiconductor, the 8mm LDR acts as a variable resistor that is "tuned" by the environment. Its larger physical size makes it easier to mount in rugged enclosures and allows it to dissipate slightly more power, making it a favorite for outdoor automation.

• Increased Sensitivity: The larger 8mm sensing window captures more light, making it significantly better at detecting light levels in "transition" periods, such as dusk or dawn.
• Wider Field of View: Due to the increased diameter, the 8mm LDR has a broader detection angle, allowing it to "average" the light in a room rather than being overly sensitive to a single pinpoint light source.
