The sensor is encased in a black epoxy resin that acts as a physical infrared filter. This filter blocks out visible light (like sunlight or room lamps) so the internal photodiode only "sees" the specific wavelength used by remote controls. Inside the tiny package, it combines a PIN photodiode, an automatic gain control (AGC), and a band-pass filter.
